Why standard OPM can not test PON network?

The standard optical power meters cannot be used for testing PON networks due to the following technical reasons

Burst Mode Signal (Upstream)

In a PON network, the ONU transmits upstream signals (1310nm) in quick bursts only when permitted by the OLT, rather than a continuous stream. Standard power meters are too slow to capture these microsecond burst signals and will show inaccurate or zero readings.

Wavelength Separation (WDM)

PON networks transmit multiple wavelengths (e.g., 1490nm downstream and 1310nm upstream) over a single fiber simultaneously. A standard power meter cannot separate them and will only give you an inaccurate combined value. A dedicated PON power meter filters and measures each wavelength individually.

Pass-Through (In-line) Testing

As mentioned before, the ONU will not emit any light if it loses connection with the OLT. A standard power meter breaks the circuit when plugged in. A PON power meter features dual ports (see the picture), allowing it to be connected in-line to measure the power while the OLT and ONU are actively communicating.
Therefore, a dedicated PON power meter (like the FF-3214) is essential for accurate PON troubleshooting.
