Description

Polarization analyzer is an instrument for polarization measurement and stability monitoring. It provides comprehensive functions to analyze the polarization characteristics of optical signals, and is used for real-time detection of beam polarization parameters, high-speed analysis and monitoring of polarization states. The polarization extinction ratio of narrow band light can be measured by combining the polarization state heat cycle heater with the measurement technology of heated fiber. Four Stokes parameters are obtained simultaneously using four channels, and the instantaneous polarization state (SOP) and degree of polarization (DOP) of the input beam are measured. Due to sampling:

With rates up to 1MS/s, the instrument is ideal for analyzing interference and fluctuating signals, as well as control applications that require real-time feedback of polarization information, such as digital control loops in automated manufacturing test systems. Using the upper computer software can be displayed in real time

The Bunga sphere, the trajectory of the upper polarization state, or the change of the polarization state over time in the form of an oscilloscope, can display the polarization state (PER) in real time on the Bunga Sphere window. For specific wavelengths and temperatures, it can be quickly calibrated with a built-in self-calibration program to optimize DOP and SOP measurement accuracy.

Integrating the FF-8611 into our high-speed coherent optical testbed significantly improved our dynamic polarization mode dispersion (PMD) monitoring and compensation routines. The four-channel detector architecture derives all four Stokes parameters simultaneously, providing instantaneous measurements of input State of Polarization (SOP) and Degree of Polarization (DOP). With sampling rates reaching up to 1 MS/s, the instrument excels at capturing fast-fluctuating signals and transient interference, delivering reliable real-time feedback required for digital control loops in automated test environments. It is an indispensable tool for real-time SOP/DOP analysis and optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) tracking.

We deployed the FF-8611 SOP Polarization Analyzer across our optical fiber sensing and module testing lines. The dedicated host computer software provides outstanding visual diagnostics, displaying Poincaré sphere trajectories, polarization state changes over time, and extinction ratio metrics in real time. We particularly value the built-in self-calibration program, which quickly optimizes SOP and DOP measurement accuracy for specific operating wavelengths and ambient temperatures. Delivering a tight SOP accuracy of 0.25° and DOP accuracy of 2% across a wide -40 to +10 dBm input power range, this instrument offers exceptional value for its $5,800 USD reference price.

Characterizing narrow-band light sources and polarization-maintaining components requires high optical stability and minimal insertion degradation. Operating across the 1480 to 1620 nm wavelength band, the FF-8611 maintains a low maximum insertion loss of 1.5 dB, a PDL of 0.3 dB, and impressive return loss values (≥ 55 dB for APC connectors). It simultaneously calculates PER across a 0 to 40 dB range with 0.1 dB resolution alongside ellipsometry and Stokes parameters. For R&D labs requiring automated PER testing, high-speed interference analysis, and fiber optic sensor evaluation, the FF-8611 is a thoroughly engineered bench-top solution.
