This Visual Fault Loctor (VFL) is specially designed for field workers who need an efficient and economical tool for fiber tracing, fiber routing and continuity checking in optical networks. The VFL can find break points, poor connection point, bending or cracking in fiber optic cables; and it can find faults located in an OTDR dead zone and also can be used for end-to-end visual fiber identification.

The VFL launches 650nm visible light into a fiber. When the light encounters a break or sharp bend, it scatters, and the scattered light can be observed emerging from the cable. More importantly, The VFL can locate break points in short patchcords, which an OTDR cannot detect due to their  operating dead zone.

The Visual Fault Locator can be operated in either continuous wave mode (CW mode) or in pulsed mode. Pulsed mode aids in locating faults under high ambient light conditions and improve battery life. It also could be used in  checking connector quality.

NOTE: Customers need to buy battery by themself, because battery is refused by most mail agent to carry. This VFL uses normal AAA battery, so customers can easily get them from their local market.

Evaluating the FF-VFL-A Fibre Optic Visual Fault Locator across our field inspection teams, its slim pen-style chassis (Ø13 x 181mm) and light 106g weight make it extremely convenient for pocket carry. The 650nm FP-LD laser emitter easily isolates breakpoints, severe bends, and poor connections that reside inside OTDR dead zones. We selected the FF-VFL-A10 model with 10mW output power, which reliably traces continuous fiber links over a 12km detecting range. With an ultra-wide operating temperature range of -35℃ to +70℃ and an accessible reference price of $89 USD (SKU: FF-VFL-A), this tool is a dependable staple for outside-plant technicians.

The FF-VFL-A series provides versatile visual tracing for both single-mode and multimode optical fiber installations. Equipping our crews with the 20mW FF-VFL-A20 configuration gave us a robust 16km fault-detecting range. The 2.5mm universal connector mates cleanly with standard SC, ST, and FC ferrules, while adding the optional 1.25mm LC adapter ensures full compatibility across high-density patch panels. The option to switch between Continuous Wave (CW), 3Hz, and 9Hz pulsed modes makes pinpointing fault locations straightforward under ambient light conditions while maximizing the battery life of its 2 AAA batteries.

From a B2B network maintenance standpoint, FirstFiber’s FF-VFL-A Visual Fault Locator offers carrier-grade continuity checking at a very competitive $89 reference price. The high-power 30mW FF-VFL-A30 model delivers a 20km detection range, making end-to-end visual identification fast and effective during complex cable tracing jobs. The scattered 650nm red laser light clearly emerges at defective points or cracked patch cords, providing immediate visual verification without needing full OTDR setups. It is a durable, cost-effective addition to any fiber technician's diagnostic toolkit.
